HKBU unveils Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis
A plaque unveiling ceremony for the “Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis (Hong Kong Baptist University)”, which is a partner laboratory to the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Eco-toxicology on the Mainland, was held on 4 December 2013.

The officiating guests at the ceremony were Professor Bai Chunli, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Cao Jianlin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Wang Zhimin, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Ms. Janet Wong, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government, Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), Professor Rick Wong, Vice-President (Research & Development) of HKBU, Professor Tang Tao, Associate Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Science of HKBU, and Professor Cai Zongwei, Director of Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis (HKBU).

HKBU was recommended by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government to apply for establishing a partner state key laboratory (PSKL). After evaluating HKBU’s application, The Ministry of Science and Technology granted the University PSKL status in July 2013. The PSKL integrates the strengths of three correlated fields, namely biological science, environmental science and material science. The laboratory will promote novel analytical fundamental research with persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which affect environment, food safety and public health, as the first targeted research object. The major research areas are environmental analysis, toxicology and human health; integration of proteomics and metabolomics for POPs-related disease and human health protection; and biosensing, bioimaging and their applications in POPs-associated diseases and human health protection.

Professor Bai Chunli said that the Key Laboratory is one of the four PSKLs established in Hong Kong this year with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is also the first PSKL collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and HKBU. He said, “Over 10 years of collaboration between the CAS and HKBU, both sides have been carrying out a series of cooperative research projects utilising the complementary strengths of the CAS and HKBU. The collaboration would foster further quality development in the testing of persistent toxic pollutants and food safety in Hong Kong and on the Mainland. It would also strengthen areas such as raising the impact of scientists from China in international academic associations and activities, jointly nurturing doctoral students and organising lectureships and visits, and short-term training of distinguished young talent. The PSKL collaboration provides a good platform for promoting further cooperation in various areas between the CAS and HKBU.”

Dr. Cao Jianlin said, “The official opening today indicates further collaboration between the Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis (Hong Kong Baptist University) and the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Eco-toxicology on the Mainland. It will serve as a starting point for achieving numerous research results, and nurturing more talented scientists for innovative technology development.”

In his welcome speech, President Albert Chan expressed his gratitude on behalf of HKBU for the approval granted by The Ministry of Science and Technology in recognition of the University’s achievements. He also thanked the Innovation and Technology Commission for its assistance and support. He said, “The University is currently making preparations in various areas for the launch of the PSKL which is expected to be in service in July 2014. HKBU hopes to make use of this new platform to enhance academic exchange and research collaboration with the Mainland and to make a contribution to the nation and the world in the areas of environmental and biological analysis.” In addition, he expressed his gratitude for the efforts of various scholars and researchers.

The PSKL has a multidisciplinary research team comprising professionals from environmental, biological and material sciences. Team members include Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), awardees under the national “Thousand-Talent Plan”, chair professors from the national Chang-Jiang Scholar Programme, Distinguished Young Scientists selected by the National Science Foundation, and chair professors and other scholars of HKBU. Directors of the PSKL are Professor Cai Zongwei (Hong Kong) and Dr. Jiang Guibin, Academician of the CAS and Director of the Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences, CAS (Mainland). Associate Directors include Professor Raymond Wong, Chair Professor of Chemistry of HKBU, Professor Tang Leihan, Professor of Physics of HKBU, and Professor Chris Wong, Head of Biology of HKBU. The team will carry out research focusing on environmental and food safety, POPs-associated diseases and human health protection.

The research projects conducted currently by the PSKL include the development of novel analytical platform for environmental and biological research. These projects would provide highly effective, simple, sensitive and rapid analytical methods and also nurture talent scientists, contributing to the areas of environmental monitoring, life science research and biomarkers identification. Advances in these areas would offer scientific support to technology, social and economic development.

The PSKL is HKBU’s first partner state key laboratory and it will play a significant role in enhancing exchange and cooperation between HKBU and the Mainland.
